QuestionI've read your thoughts about anthuriums and need just a little more info. I've owned my a. for almost 4 years. It is the first house plant I've ever really succeeded with and I am afraid of injuring it. I've re-potted it once to its present 9" terra cotta pot. It is definitely root bound and now has 10 separate sections, each looking as though they would become separate plants if it lived in the ground. It has flowered magnificently since about April this year, when I started feeding it. There are still new flowers appearing but not as plentifully. My question: should I repot the whole plant or separate it? If the latter, how? Is this the best season (I live in NE). Thank you.
AnswerJanice,
No, it is not the best season. in the fall as the days are shortening the roots of tropical plants stop growing. If you repot now they will just sit in the larger pot and there is a much better chance of root rot because they will have more water in the larger pot but will not be growing so they will not use the extra water. It may also send the plant into shock. You are much better off waiting to repot between April 15th and June 15th when the days are growing longer and the roots are growing. For anthurium the closer to June the better and I would do it outside and separate it into 3-4 sections per pot into 3 smaller pots so they fit fairly snugly into the pots. As you discovered this year they bloom better when they are rootbound. After repotting fertilize them with a bloooming plant fertilizer andy you might leave them outside in a shady location for the summer or at least one of them and see how it does compared to indoors. I'd bet it will do better. Good luck.
