QuestionI believe i have an umbrella plant i'm just wondering if it's poisonous my grand son loves to put things in his mouth and this plant is one of those things he has broke out in hives we're not sure where they came from also is there more than one type of umbrella plants. THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON Tracey
AnswerHi Tracey,
As a general rule all houseplants should be considered potentially poisonous. Even plants that are not specifically labeled as poisonous could still cause adverse affects in children or animals if eaten. Any non food plant can cause an allergic reaction, even if it is known to be nonpoisonous.
There are many plants that are called 'Umbrella' plants. The most common plant that goes by that name is the Schefflera plant. Schefflera is listed as being a poisonous plant.
Your grandson broke out in hives and hives is usually a symptom of an allergic reaction, not poisoning.
It is always best to keep all houseplants in a place away from children and animals.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
