QuestionWe have a Fiddleleaf Fig houseplant approx. 8' tall in the corner of our Bedroom. It has windows on both side walls, but gets no direct sun, just a lot of light. The plant has roots showing on the surface of the dirt. Recently it also has been losing leaves. Can detect no fungus or bugs. Please talk about watering the fiddleleaf (I afraid I not watering enough, but don't want the roots to rot). Also should the plant have 'air roots' or should I cover them up? Thanks for your help.
AnswerSuzanne,
Fiddle leaf Figs love direct sun. If at all possible move it to in front of one of those windows. I would also go to a garden center like Walmart, Lowes, Builder's Square and pick up a water meter. They usually cost between $5-10.00 and it will tell you if it needs water or not. Insert it into the soil as deep as it will go and do not water it unless it is into the dry section. The aerial roots do not need covered up, they are healthy. Do not repot the plant unless you want it to grow larger, then only do it in the spring. If you do not want it to grow larger write me in the spring and I will tell you haw to prune the top and do some root pruning so you can keep it in the same pot and still allow it to grow and stay healthy. Good luck.
