leaves of the Lily plant geting dark

Question
QUESTION: Hi Darlene,
i bought a  Lily plant and it bloomed this year for the first time. for the last 2 weeks i noticed that the leaves turning dark...my plant is 40cm tall and the pot size is 20cm length and 25cm diameter. I have kept the plant outside near the entrance facing south.please help me....

ANSWER: Lovy,

Peace lily plants get black leaves because of root problems. Root problems are generally caused by too much water. They should not be allowed to sit with water in the drain tray. If it is outside it may be getting too much moisture from the rain. This plant does not like a lot of sun either so it should be in a shady location. Did you repot the plant into a larger pot or is the pot the original one the plant came in? If the plant is overpotted into too large a pot it is very easy for it to stay too wet for too long. This plant prefers to be rootbound so the roots totally fill the pot. Then it does not stay too wet for too long. I reccommend that you take it indoors where you can control the water better. Put it in a bright location indoors then water it when the soil is dry. Check this with a moisture meter or by inserting a bamboo skewer into the soil and do not water until the top 2/3rds comes out dry. The black leaves should stop. I only water my peace lily weekly in the summer and every 2-3 weeks during the winter. The plant is mjuch healthier if kept on the dry side. Good luck with your plant.

QUESTION: thanks a lot for your advice, actually i repot the plant,i also find a black bead like thing at the junction / at the joints of each leaves..... is it a part of the plant or something else?

Answer
Lovy,

This is not a good time of year to repot the plant. You should not have planted the plant in a pot any larger than the one it was in previously and if you disturbed the roots it will probably put the plant into shock and may kill it. The bead like structure is part of the plant structure. Keep the plant very dry and in a bright room and it may survive. Good luck.
