QuestionHello! I have a spineless yukka on my south facing porch. I have had it for almost a year and had no problems when I brought it home from Lowes and re-potted it. Today I bought another one (they are hard to find!) so I could have one on each side of my porch. When I was re-potting this new one, the smaller "stump" just slid out of the soil with no roots attached... is this ok? It has just one clump of leaves that is very green and crisp/healthy looking. Will it develop roots eventually? Also, at the top of this smaller stump and on the bigger stump, there is this dark grey wax/tar. It looked like they were cut then dipped into something to help seal it off or to help it heal. Do I need to remove this? My older yukka plant does not have this wax. Plus it is ugly! Thanks so much! - Amy
AnswerAmy,
Yes, eventually it will get roots, it might be helpfull to go back to Lowes and pick up a bottle of Schultz Starter Solution and follow the instructions on the bottle. That should help it root faster.
It was dipped in the wax to help keep it from getting a fungal infection. You can remove it but I would wait until it is firmly rooted. I hope that the pot you transplanted it into was no more than 2 inches larger in diameter than the pot you removed it from>> If you move it to too large a pot you will overwater it and the roots will rot and the yucca will die. Be sure to let it dry out well between waterings. Good luck.
