Questionmy rubber tree plant is very large and very heavy the roots are growing out of my pot how can i prune the roots and repot it into the same pot if i get a larger one me and my husband won't be able to lift it. thank you
AnswerTheresa,
You & your husband need to get it outside or in the garage and carefully remove it from the pot. Then take a long sharp nife and cut at least 2 inches off the rootball all the way around and on the bottom. While it is out of the pot clean the pot and mix some fresh soil (mix 2 part potting soil with 1 part perlite) and put 2 inches of the mix on the bottom of the pot before putting the tree back in the pot. Then fill in around the sides with additional fresh soil.
Once the plant is back in the pot and the soil is firmed around it you should then prune the top of the tree also. Cut it back by at least 25% and shape it so that it has a pleasing shape. You can repeat this process every 2-3 years and the plant should stay healthy. Good luck.
