QuestionI purchased a Sago Palm from Home Depot today. It appears that it is "glued" in a pot with NO drainage holes in it. I could not get the tag out to see what the care requirements were as it too was "glued" in. I watered it, and the water did not escape the pot, however, I was very tempted to break the ceramic pot and repot it with potting soil. Decided not too until I got more information. It I need to repot it, what kind of soil and why in the world would someone sell a "glued in" plant? It may not be glue but I can not even move the rocks that set on top of the dirt (if in fact there is any). HELP!!!
FYI- this plant is relatively small - in an 8" pot (guesstimate)
Thank you, Beth
AnswerBeth,
They are glued together stones but the pot usually is a bonsai pot with drainage holes in the bottom. Sago palms cannot stand to sit in a lot of water. The glued together stones can be dealt with by using a sturdy screw driver and wedging it between the stones or even using a hammer to force it between the stones then pry up to pry the stones loose. I usually have no problem breaking them loose once I get them started. Definitely move it to a pot with a drainage hole but do not put it in a pot that is any more than slightly larger than the pot it is in now. For potting soil use 2 parts of cactus soil (or sand) mixed with 1 part of regular potting soil. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
