flying insects

Question
PLEASE HELP ME OUT ON HOW TO GET RID OF THESE LITTLE FLYING BUGS THAT ARE IN MY DIRT. I REPOT MY PLANTS I DID KNOW THAT THESE BUGS CAME IN THE DIRT.ALL I WANT TO DO IS GET RID ON THEM I DON'T WANT TO THROW AWAY MY PLANT OF FOUR YEARS

Answer
Linese,

The insects are fungus gnats. The soil you used to repot your plants is poor quality soil with not enough air in it and probably too much peat moss. One solution would be to add more perlite to the potting soil so it will drain better and have more oxygen in the soil so the roots breathe better. You also need to let the soil dry out more between waterings and never let the plants sit with a drain tray full of water. If the plants are even slightly overwatered the roots will begin to rot and that attracts fungus gnats. Keep the plants dryer and then water the plants with rubbing alcohol and it will kill the fungus gnats without killing the plants roots. Good luck.
