peace lilly blooms dont open

Question
I have two and three large plants in 10 " pots indoors during the winter and on a shady patio during the summer.  I separated one large pot a couple of years ago.  I get plenty of white buds on the plants, especially during the fall, but the buds don't open.  I don't think they've ever flowered during the summer.  I wonder what's wrong.  The leaves look very healthy.

Answer
Laura,

Peace Lilly blooms are not the same as typical lillies. You can see the blooms at the following site: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=peace%20lilly%20&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=...

If the blooms are not opening I suggest you try giving them more light and some fertilizer.  Make sure you get fertilizer for blooming plants. Also give them 3 teaspoons of epsom salts sprinkled on top of the soil  before you water them next time. Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate and will trigger blooming in blooming plants.

Part of the problem may be that you severely overpotted them when you divided them 2 years ago.  This plant prefers to be rootbound and blooms much better when they are. They are much happier and healthier when they are crowded in a full pot. You should not repot them or divide them again for at least 6-8 years. Right now they are putting most of their energy into growing roots and not flowers.

Be patient, give them a bit more sun, more fertilizer, epsom salts and you will eventually get plenty of flowers. Good luck.
