QuestionI have an umbrella tree that is about a year old, 2.5 to 3 feet tall, in my office. I repotted it into a 14 inch terra cotta pot using a standard potting mix/sand mixture, with rocks about 2 inches deep at the bottom for drainage. It gets 8 hours of light from 2 overhead florescents, and I leave the lights on on weekends. I water about 3 times a month until water runs out of the bottom. It drops a significant number of leaves every night, however, some of which turn somewhat yellow. Some leaves also have brown spotting on the bottom. Is there something wrong, and what can I do to fix it? Thanks!
AnswerIt is most likely that it's not getting any sunlight. However, there is good news they now have light bulbs that are specifically for plants, they are about $3.78 at the following site: http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page/001/PROD/Plant/60A-PL
It lasts 1000 hours or 41 days and 4 hours Strait! Yes, I did ALLOT of Math, and it was all by hand!
Anyway, if you transplant it again just use a normal potting mix no sand no rocks. When the say drainage they mean there should be some holes in the bottom of the pot so the water can drain out of the pot, and most likely into a water catcher. You can buy those at WalMart for $0.40-$1.99! I hope this helps and don't forget to rate me!
Best Wishes,
Samuel
P.S., Don't use clay pots, they have a secret and the secret is the absorb the want from the plants and it evaporates without the plant using it!
