Question
New Baby
Hi Darlene. I have a two-part question. I have a beautiful Dinner Plate Aralia that is starting to drop bottom leaves. It's at work in a south-facing window, and has been in the same spot for about a year. I think it's losing leaves because it's time; the plant has never lost a leaf, and she continues to sprout new branches (maybe you can see the baby in the picture). A co-worker says it's because the plant has gotten too cold in the window and is dying. Which brings me to part two. Are there any houseplants that can live year-round in a window despite the Michigan winters? Thanks again Darlene.
AnswerTamika,
This plant is just fine in the window even in Michigan. It can handle temperatures down to 35 degrees so it is fine. You are right it is just time to loose a few leaves. It is a shrub type plant so it is sprouting new branches. Most houseplants will survive temperatures down to 45 degrees and I doubt your windowsill is colder than that unless the leaves touch the glass. Cacti can survive down to 30 degrees. Good luck.
