plants & soils

Question
My 8 year old son wants to do his science project using 2 to 3 different soils to grow one kind of plant to see what would yield the best plant.  Do you have any thoughts on what would make a good combo, with one soiling showing a real difference?
Thanks! Karen

Answer
Karen,

I would suggest using soil dug up in the yard or garden in one pot, maybe from an area with a lot of clay in the soil. For the second pot I would use potting soil from Walmart, whatever is the cheapest brand. For the third pot I would use 2 parts of potting soil mixed with 1 part of perlite(little white pellets, they lighten the soil and add air that helps the roots to breathe and grow better.). If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene.
