QuestionHi Tracy, I got a money tree from the nursery last week and it was in pretty good shape. However, I've noticed about 4-5 leaves are turning yellow. I used to have a money tree for a couple of years and it did well. But suddenly all the leaves fell off and it died. I'm afraid history will repeat itself. The advices I found on the internet vary a lot. Some say money tree needs more light and others say less light or the leaves will burn. Maybe my plant is experiencing shocked? What is the best thing I can do to keep my plant green? Thank you so much for your help in advance.
AnswerHi Danny,
Most plants get stressed when moved to a new environment. One of the most common things a plant does in response to this stress is to drop some of it's leaves. It usually takes about 2-4 weeks for a plant to recover from the stress of a new environment. The leaf drop will gradually slow down and then stop.
There are many reasons your previous money tree suddenly dropped all of it's leaves and died. Some of the most common causes could have been overwatering (or underwatering), insects or a cold draft.
Give your money tree bright, indirect sunlight. A curtain filtered east or west facing window would be ideal. Do not put the plant in a south facing window. The sunlight is too strong and a south facing window also generates too much heat for a lot of plants.
Avoid overwatering. As a general rule, you should allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between watering. Then water the plant until a small amount of water drains from the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.
Check the plant regularly for any sign of insects or mites. The key to insect control on houseplants is early detection and prompt adequate treatment.
Here are links to a couple of guides I have written that I think might be helpful to you. This one is on general plant care. It has a lot of information and tips on plant care;
