QuestionDo you know if a banana fica is toxic to cats?
AnswerHi Ashley,
I am not really familiar with Banana Fica. However all plants should be considered toxic to animals. Most of the plants that are commonly used for houseplants are not good for pets. Even plants that are not considered poisonous can still harm animals, especially young animals like kittens and puppies.
I have 3 cats and over 75 houseplants so I know how difficult it is to keep cats from the occasional nibble on a houseplant.
There are several things you can do to keep your cats from chewing on houseplants.
Since cats can get just about anywhere, it is a lot harder to keep cats off of plants than dogs. Plus cats and plants both love window sills. Using artificial plant lighting, you can set plants in places that cats can not go. Putting a pepper spray or bitter apple spray on the leaves will sometimes keep cats from chewing on plants.
Orange or lemon peels and/or putting a layer of rocks on top of the soil should keep cats from digging in the soil.
The reason cats chew on houseplants is because cats need some vegetation in their diets. Cats that go outside will chew on grass. Since it is best (and safest) for cats to remain indoors at all times, you can grow a pot of cat grass for them to nibble on. You can buy a small bag of seeds at any pet store for about $1.99 (or less). Once I started always keeping a pot of fresh cat grass growing at all times, my cats stopped nibbling on my houseplants. Cats will much prefer cat grass over an Ivy or a Philodendron (although one of my cats absolutely loves prayer plants and will go after them whenever he can). I always grow the cat grass in the same pot so my cats know that is 'their' pot.
Cat grass grows very quickly so you will need to keep it trimmed.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
