indoor ivy plants

Question
I have an ivy which is very happy.  I sprouted babies from it in water about 6 mounts ago. Now, the mother plant looks like it is crowded in it's 8" pot (which is 7 1/2" tall). The plant store told me to get another pot of the same size and put half of the plant in the new pot. Does this sound like a good idea? I'm not one who likes to cut back the long vines, and I'm afraid of hurting the plant if I try to separate it at the roots. Thank you for any specific instructions or ideas. Sincerely, Gloria

Answer
Gloria ,

This is not the right time of year to do anything. Right now because of the shorter days of winter your plant is semi dormant anyway and you need to be very careful not to overwater any of your plants. It will be fine in the 8" pot until after April 1st. At that time when the days are longer and the roots are actively growing if you really want to you can repot it into a 10" pot but do not go any larger. You should never move any plant to a pot with a diameter more than 2 inches larger than the pot you too the plant out of. Then you keep the rootball intact. Do all repotting between April 1st and June 15th. Good luck.
