QuestionI have had a rubber tree plant for 2 yrs (new plant from grandma's funeral) and mistakenly repotted it into a 20" pot which, I think is too big (I think it was in a 14-16). It is 5-6' tall and has 11-one inch stalks. It is very healthy and has done very well outside. We bring it in when it's cold (dec, jan in central texas). The problem is the stalks are too weak to stand erect on their own. I've tried to tie them up to stakes but it's unwieldy. Should I prune to 1-2 stalks and let them thicken or is there a good way to train the existing stalks?
AnswerNicole,
Yes your pot was too big, but now I am sure it has grown into the pot. I would prune 6 of the stalks off and then prune 4 of the stalks to shorter lengths and leave 2 taller. Give it as much sun as possible and during the summer fertilize it regularly. You still may need to stake them for awhile to help them get stronger. Goodluck.
