large Corn Stalk House Plant

Question
My Corn Stalk is top heavy and I need to top off the top portion which is touching the ceiling and repot that portion.  How do I do this?  The pot size holds 50 lbs of soil, plant is next to 6ft. slider door, repotted approx 3 yrs ago.  The top portion has just fallen over and I'm afraid the weight of it is going to make it snap.  Please help.  This plant is approx 10-15 yrs old and I don't want to loose it.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
Hi Debbie,

It is best to prune back corn plants before they touch the ceiling. Once they touch the ceiling, they become distorted in shape.

The stem can be cut at any point and at any angle. The new growth will emerge on the stem just below where you make the pruning cut, so you decide where you would like to see new growth come in and cut accordingly.

The cut-off section will root best if the bottom portion of the stem cutting is not too long and is still green. So you may to shorten it some before rooting it in plain water or in a small pot filled with damp potting mix.

Pruning never harms a healthy plant, so don't hesitate to do it.
