Question
no name for the plant
Darlene,
this is a photo of the plant that I don't have a name for...can it be saved? Sadly it hasn't been watered in a very long time and seems to be drying up...what can i do?
Thanks, Heidi
AnswerHeidi,
This plant is a Dracaena reflexa or 'Song of Jamaica'. It is a sister plant to the corn plant which is a Dracaena Warneckii. You have not killed either plant. In fact both plants do like to dry out well between waterings. Start watering more regularly now and as the plants improve you can trim the bron off. The brown will not turn green again. Next spring you may want to start pruning 1 stalk at a time back and letting it regrow but don't worry about that until the plant is healthier. Make sure you let both plants get dry before you water them again. They do not like to be constantly wet. Do not water them with water that has chlorine or flouride in it. That will cause more brown splotches in the leaves, dracaenas hate flouride. If that is in your water let the water sit in an open bucket for 48 hours before you water the plants with it then the flouride will dissipate into the air and the water will be fine for the plants. Just try to water them about every 10-14 days during the winter and weekly during the summer. Good luck.
