Ming

Question
I have 3 year old Ming (dinnerplate I think) that gets rust spots on the leaves then they fall off and grow bak again and the same thing happens. It gets lots of light and water. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Danielle,

A limited number of leaves developing rust colored spots and dying is normal.

However, if it is extensive, then the first thing to check is your water quality. If your tap water is on the hard side or is artificially softened, then use distilled or filtered water.

The next thing to check is the soil moisture level. The top inch of soil should dry out in between thorough waterings. Keeping the soil too moist can cause the symptoms you described and eventually lead to root rot. If you recently repotted, then that may be causing the soil to stay moist for too long.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
