Lime Tree - Indoors

Question
I'm looking to get a lime tree to grow inside my home. I get lots of sunlight from skylights and have cathedral ceilings. Will this work? Where is the best place to buy one? Will it bear fruit all year? Help.

Answer
Hi Bob,

Skylights generally provide far less light than is commonly recognized. Citrus trees require direct sunlight pretty much all day long. Direct sun coming through a skylight is rarely in one location for more than a couple of hours. If you have a large, uncovered, south-facing window, then that would be suitable. But the skylight alone is probably not.

Even in the best of circumstances, indoor citrus trees only produce fruit once per year. If you are counting on it to supply you with limes year round, then this is not a good investment.

You would have to check online to see who sells citrus trees in your area or by mail order. If you get one by mail order, make sure you are not getting an ornamental variety that produces very small, bitter fruit or an immature tree that is years away from bearing fruit.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
