QuestionI've been keeping my jasmine plant inside the house with lots of sunlight. I watered it everyday and it was very healthy. It bloomed all the time. Then I found there was a lot of water in the pot (probably for awhile), so I emptied the all of the water out of the pot and water it less (once every other day). Ever since I emptied out the water (about a month ago), the plant became withered and dried. The leaves are falling off and the vines are almost dried up. Is my plant dying? What can do to revive it?
Thanks,
Lyly
AnswerHi Lyly,
Your Jasmine is suffering from root rot. A jasmine should be watered about once per week, but never daily. In addition, it should never be allowed to sit in water for more than a day or so.
With all of the excess water that it has been exposed to, the roots have gradually rotted. The withering of the leaves after you drained the water was just coincidental. It would have happened even if you had not drained the water.
At this point, I don't think there is anything you can do to save the plant because I believe the roots are dead. If you are desperate to try to save it, you can prune it back, allow the top half-inch of soil to dry out in between waterings, and look for signs of healthy new growth. If you don't see any improvement within a month, then there is nothing more you can do.
