Question
DSCF0114
Hi Will,
Seen some of your answers to questions and you seem to know about what ails anything. I think this picture is rather large, so hope that is OK. I've had the plant for a couple of weeks, and repotted it in the rather nice number from Chinatown, I used Cactus soil to fill the spaces. Have given very little water since I understand it does not like much. Today I found a lot of dead and the odd moving one, I guess centipedes on top of the soil, they are whitish and curl up if upset. What ought I to do, the plunge in water routine? Rinse off all the soil with hot water and totally replant? Is cactus soil OK?
Thanks

AnswerHi Martin,
A few pests in the soil are not a cause for concern and they will not damage the plant or its roots. However, most people are not comfortable with critters inside their homes and want to get rid of them.
Plunging the pot up to its rim in plain water for 30 minutes usually drives the critters out of the soil and that takes care of it.
Rinsing off soil from the roots is never a good idea. That procedure damages the tiny, nearly invisible roothairs that do most of the work. Soil rinsing may eradicate the critters, but there is a good chance it will also kill the plant.
Cactus soil mixed with standard potting soil, is a good combination for your Beaucarnea.
