Schefflera with white splotches on leaves

Question
I have a Schefflera that has single white splotches covering a good deal of the leaf on several leaves. It looks almost as if bleach had been spilled on them and the leaves are thin where the splotches are. I've had it out on my deck this summer so it can get shaded light. Could you tell me what is causing this as it is a sentimental plant to me. Thank you for any help!

Answer
Hi Stephine,

Your Schefflera has sunburn spots. Outdoor light is much more intense than indoor light. Even light shade outdoors can be too much, especially since some leaves are sure to be exposed to direct sun during the course of the day.

The damaged leaves will not recover, so you may want to trim them off. I suggest that you keep your plant indoors throughout the year to avoid this in the future. Changes in light can stress a plant. Remember that in nature, plants put down roots and stay in one spot for their lifetime.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
