Question
Hi Will, just a quick question. I have purchased several plants from Home Depot this year. I have heard people complain about the soil that is used in the Exotic Angel plants. Do you know what the big deal is? Nearly all of the ones that i have purchased have died. Its like when I water them, they stay wet forever. I have watched them die, one by one. I have Hoyas that have died. A Creeping fig, and a Devils Ivy. They have all died. Should I repot them when I purchased them? Should I just let them get super dry before I water them? Please help if you can. I appreciate any info. Thanks  Nana

Answer
Hi Nana,

I (fortunately) don't have a Home Depot near me so I am not familiar with their plants. However, I do know that Big Box store plants are not always of the best quality.

I have used some Exotic Angel plants and have not observed anything unusual about the potting mixes used. Mostly they use a peat-based potting mix, but that is common with the growers of most indoor plants nowadays.

If the plants are potted in the proper sized pots, then the soil should dry out within 14 days or less. If it takes longer than that, then the roots may begin to rot. Using pots that are too big is the most common reason for soil to stay moist for too long. Repotting and replacing soil is usually not a good idea.

How dry the soil should get before you water depends on the plant species. Peace lilies should be watered as soon as the surface of the soil feels almost dry. Hoyas, on the other hand, should dry out at least halfway deep into the pot before watering.

Light is also a very important consideration. If you are not providing enough light - a common problem - then the plant will die no matter how you treat the watering.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
