light exposure for house plant

Question
I would like to buy a ficus lyrata for an indoor houseplant.I am concerned because I need to place it in an area that does not get a lot of light (there are windows in the room, 13 ft. away, southern exposure). Will that be enough light? If not do you have suggestions for a lush looking indoor plant that would do well indoors. I llve in San Diego area. Thanks, Lynn

Answer
Hi Lynn,

Light intensity drops off dramatically with each foot of distance from the light source (window). At 13 feet, the light is very low and not bright enough for a Ficus lyrata, which would need to be within 5-6 feet of a south window.

If you contact me directly at [email protected] and indicate that you want my article on low light plants, I will email you a copy. It lists all of the plants that would do well in the location you indicated.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
