Indoor plants, zero sunlight

Question
I抦 a manager in an office that no sunlight. I share a space with 15 other people. Our space is approximately 50?x 60? We have fluorescent lighting throughout the space. They are grid lights, (4) 48?tubes spaced in a rectangular pattern every 10?in one direction, every 8?in the other direction. The lights are on from at least 8:30 AM until 6:30 PM every day.

I抎 like to bring some plants into the space to improve air quality and generally brighten the place up. Can you provide a suggestion on what sorts of plants could survive / thrive in these conditions? The response is of great interest to my company, which comprises about 700 people across the country, in Europe, Australia, and Asia, as we're all trying to get a little more green.
Thanks,
Len Laurito

Answer
Hi Len,

It may surprise you to learn that there are quite a few plants that will do well in the office light that you describe. flourescent light is very good for plants.

Here is a list (in no particular order) of low light plants for you to consider using in your office:

Dracaena massangeana (corn plant)
Dracaena 'Janet Craig'
Dracaena 'Lisa'
Dracaena 'Warneckei'
Pothos
Aglaonema (Chinese evergreen)
Spathiphyllum (peace lily)
Chamaedorea elegans
Philodendron
ZZ Plant
Aspidistra
Dieffenbachia

In reduced light, all plants grow more slowly, do not need repotting, use less water, and do not require fertilizer. In sum, they need less rather than more. That is important to understand in caring for plants in an office environment.
