Christ in the cradle

Question
I have a christ in the cradle plant that has bloomed and now has some reddish looking elongated pods where blooms were.someone told me that these were an edible fruit, can you tell me if this is true

Answer
Hi Donna,

Christ in the cradle usually refers to Tradescantia spathacea (formerly Rhoeo spathacea), so I will assume that is what you have. However, for this plant, the pods are nothing more than outer shells that hold the tiny white flowers inside. They are not edible fruit.

Perhaps there is a mistaken identification of this plant, but the plant commonly called by this name does not produce edible fruit.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
