QuestionI just purchased a snake plant in a six inch pot and the tallest is about 18 inches high. I've read that this plant likes to be root bound. Is it better to repot in the Spring or Fall? What is the best way to repot it? Should I just repot it in a slightly bigger pot or should I trim some of the roots then repot? I also noticed some tiny little white bugs in the soil but not on the plants? What do you think they might be?
AnswerCrystal,
Is it better to repot in the Spring or Fall? Spring, anytime after April 1st
What is the best way to repot it? Should I just repot it in a slightly bigger pot or should I trim some of the roots then repot? Just move it to a pot with a diameter 2 inches larger than the pot it is in now. Use a standard potting soil and by an extra bag of perlite. Mix 2 parts of potting soil with 1 part of perlite and use this to repot all of your houseplants any time you need to repot. It will help them drain better and give them a better root system.
I also noticed some tiny little white bugs in the soil but not on the plants? What do you think they might be? they are larva of fungus gnats that come from overwatering. This plant needs to get totally dry between waterings. When it doesn't you get some root rot which attracts fungus gnats. Cut back on the amount of water and do not water it more than every 2 weeks. In the mean time water it with a bottle of rubbing alcohol. That will kill all the larva in the soil. Cutting back on the water will keep them away. Good luck.
