plant worms

Question
I have had a massaneana cane for more than a year now and it has been doing fine. All of a sudden I noticed small worms just in the soil, not on the plant itself. Nothing has changed, not the soil, place, water, nothing. What can I do ? Thanks

Answer
Hi Sue,

It is not uncommon to see small critters in the potting soil. Many growers don't use completely sterile soil. The worm-like critters have probably been there all along and you haven't noticed them. They do not harm the plant and they don't grow larger or leave the soil, so you could safely ignore them.

If you don't like the thought of them being there, then you can try this. Plunge the pot up to its rim into a tub filled with plain water. Leave it for about 30 minutes. This will cause the worms to rise to the surface in search of air and they can be scooped off and discarded.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
