trimming a norfolk island pin ?

Question
Hi ... I have a beautiful 8' Norfolk Island Pind and it is ready to outgrow my home.  Can you trim it ... cut the top?
I'm thinking NO.
And if I can't trim it, how would I go about moving it?
It's just such a big, beautiful plant ... I want someone to enjoy it if I can't.
I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks.
Annette

Answer
Hi Annette,

This is a problem with NIP's. They only grow taller and eventually they outgrow their indoor spaces. Once the growing tip is pruned off, it will stop growing and die very slowly.

To move it, ball up some newspaper and press the newspaper on top of the soil. Then tape the newspaper in place. The purpose is to keep the soil from spilling out when the plant is tipped sideways. Once the soil is  secured, then you can tip the tree horizintally so you can carry it through doorways and lay it down in the back of a vehicle to  move it. Just be careful that you don't break any of the branches.
