shamrocks

Question
my shamrocks closed up a few weeks ago and have never opened again.  what happened?  this is the first time in the four years i have had them that this has come about.

Answer
Wanda,

Shamrocks are bulb plants, like tulips and need periodic rest periods. It is surprising that it did not tae a rest periond for 4 years! The first sign that a plant is entering dormancy is leaf die-back. If this begins to occur, stop watering and fertilizing the plant. The leaves can be cut back or allowed to die-back on their own and the plant should be moved to a cool, dark place for three to six months, after which new foliage will start emerging from the soil. After three months check it periodically for signs of new growth. When this occurs, move the plant to a SUNNY LOCATION and begin watering and fertilizing again and treat it as you always have.  Good luck.
