wilting jade plant

Question
My jade tree was beautiful 2 weeks ago, but now it is wilting quite badly. It isn't dropping any leaves just wilting. It has been inside in the shade for a week. I am letting it dry out, but it doesn't look any different yet. Any ideas of what I can do about this?

Answer
Janette,

If it has turned soft an mushy and sections have collapsed it has been severely overwatered. The collapsed sections will not come back. Cut them off back to firm tissue and put the plant back in the sunniest location possible. When it is outside do not have a drain tray under it so the water drains away freely and do not water it unless the soil feels dry. Indoors water it and an hour later empty the drain tray and do not water again until it feels very dry and light weight. Especially in the winter this plant should only be watered every 2-3 weeks. It comes from the plains of South Africa and likes long dry spells. To much water will kill it. If there is some firm tissue left cut it back to that and it will grow out again. Otherewise, get another and try again, they grow relatively fast and you have learned a hard lesson. Good luck.
