QuestionI inherited my mom's potted palm when she passed away and unfortunately I know nothing about them. This one is on a single long stalk (needs to be propped up with a stake)with fronds that look like Kentia. Can I transplant it or propagate it so that it is shorter and sturdier? It doesn't look good but due to sentimental value I want to keep some part of it.
AnswerCandace, what kind of light are you giving this Palm? Direct Sun is too intense for many Palms, but bright light is still part of the TLC they need to do well. They won't grow in a closet or a corner, even if the room is lit up with fixtures. How much light do you provide?
As far as making this plant shorter, you can't really make Bonsai specimens of Palms. There are strong chemicals that dwarf plant cells in certain ways when used correctly -- growers use them to build stocky Geraniums and other florist plants for market. That is not really an option for you here.
If you do not like the size of this plant, consider that these are usually graceful, balanced, beautiful plants that really add something to any room. I have two Palms perched on the headboard in a bedroom, one at each side, and they are perfect. Brighter light -- bright enough, that is, but not so much that the leaves brown from sunburn -- will keep it from stretching for more lumens.
These are easy, forgiving plants. Give this one better care and it will -- 'scuse the expression -- grow on you. :)
