Colour light for indoor plants

Question
Regarding indoor plants, does the colour of the light make any difference and is there a particular type of light which best suits growing plants indoors.
Regards and thanks,
Kathy

Answer
Hi Kathy,

Interesting question and a good one. But I am not sure I understand your interest, so let me know if I am not getting at what you really want to know.

Natural light, which we perceive as white light, contains all of the colors of the spectrum and is best for plant growth. However, plants use more of the light in the red and blue ranges for healthy growth.

Standard incandescent light bulbs produce light predominately in the red range with very little in the blue range so they are not good plant lights. Special plant or grow lights do include more blue light to supplement the red light. However, standard fluorescent lights do provide light in the essential parts of the spectrum for plant growth.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
