Canela is dying rapidly...help!

Question
I have had my canela(TM) plant for only a couple months.  It stands 5' tall and came in a 10" pot which I planted in a slightly larger 13" pot.  My first replanting (I know..) the entire root ball (in the shape of the 10" pot) was separating from the new soil because the pot wasn't deep enough and I thought the plant roots and the new soil should blend together...so I replanted it in a slightly taller not larger pot to ensure I could get soil to cover the entire base.  Sometimes it seems like the water isn't even absorbed by the roots (in the shape of the old pot)I water it once a week but can't tell if it is dry because that root ball is so compact it's like touching a sponge.  I did spray it with a indoor plant general purpose bug killer because I noticed small bugs in the soil.  I put it in front of a south facing window thinking it would like more light.  I don't know if I am under or over watering or if it is the sun...etc.  The leaves that I am removing feel chalky.  When I purchased the plant I wiped down most of the leaves and now the powder is back.

Help, I do not want this plant to die...

I am sending you pictures.  Notice how it looks like there is brown flowing through the veins of the leave and that it dies from the outer most part of the leaf rendering it dry.  Hope you can help.

Answer
Hi Amy,

Thanks for the photos, but I really need a photo of the entire plant, including its pot to be able to make an assessment.

The leaf photos tell me that the problem is probably related to the roots.

I am very confused by your description of just what you did when you repotted. However, I am quite confident that the repotting was unnecessary and that the problem likely stems from the repotting that was both unnecessary and probably not done correctly.
