Norfolk Pine branch growth

Question
Hi, Will -
I have Norfolk Pine that has been an indoor houseplant since I got it as a seedling some 35+ years ago.  It seems healthy and continues to grow at the crown.  I have noticed, however, that the lower mature branches sometimes put out new growth in the middle of the branch.  Usually the new growth appears on the top side of the branch and grows out at 45 degree angle.  The rest of the branch, both above and below the new growth, remains healthy.  This is a relatively new development and I wonder if this is normal or a cry for help of some kind.  Should I prune away the old or new growth or just let it be?  It looks a little wild and wooly, but otherwise healthy.  Thanks for your help.

Diana

Answer
Hi Diana,

That is quite unusual. But so is a 35 year old NIP houseplant!

For some reason the growth hormones are being redirected to the middle of the affected branches. It may be environmental or it may be a genetic aberration. But certainly this is not a cause for concern and you should not take any corrective action.

I would love to see a photo if you are willing to do that for me. Send it to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
