red flowers on anthurium

Question
I have two anthurium plants. The smaller one has beautiful leaves but does not grow any red flowers. The larger one also has lovely leaves, still has some of the original red flowers, but also does not grow any new red flowers. What can I do to get it to flower again?

Answer
Vera,

Anthuriums require little care, and bloom almost continuously in good conditions. They need to be in pots with drainage holes and drain trays and they lie to be a bit rootbound. They do not bloom as well in too big a pot. This blooming plant likes bright light and needs to dry out to the touch between watering, making good drainage essential. Even when they are not in bloom, they are a beautiful foliage plant.

To get continual blossoms, you will need to use a blooming plant food. Look for a food where the middle number is the largest of the three numbers, representing high phosphoric acid content. (When the first number, representing Nitrogen, is the largest number, it is good foliage plant food, and the third number, representing Soluble Potash, is for stronger root development, which is a good transplanting food.) You can also give your plant a teaspoon of epsom salts sprinkled on top of the soil before watering it. Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate and that will trigger blooms in blooming plants. Do not give epsom salts more than once a year. Feed your Antherium once a month to ensure a healthy blooming plant. With the Anthurium, as with any houseplant, the more light it get, the more foliage it will have, the more water it will need, the more plant food it needs. Good luck.
