Shelf below a sloping ceiling, whats best to grow there?

Question
Hi there,
I have a low, narrowish shelf below a sloping ceiling that's crying out for some green. It gets almost no direct natural light but the room is brightish thanks to a velux window. It's an attic room so it's warmish (but only warm by English standards as I live in the UK!) in summer, quite cold in winter. I favour things with interesting foliage or even flowers (unlikely I know with low light levels) and because of the nature of the shelf it can't be too tall, something trailing might be better. What can you suggest for me? Or, more excitingly, could I grow orchids hydroponically from seedling here? (I've been lusting after seedlings on eBay and reading up on hydroponics)
Thanks in advance of your answer!

Answer
Cold in the winter, Warm in the U.K., some light but not much.... It does not sound like a recipe for Orchids, sadly.  Most blooming plants will not be thriving in this particular location.  Tell me, are you averse to foliage plants?  Your options there are broad and lively.

How is the humidity?  Do you do a lot of central heating of your room in the cold winter?  How dry is the air?

And how much experience do you have with houseplants?

Sounds like a very nice idea to put a plant up there.  I really like your idea of hanging or trailing a plant.

Please let me know, then we'll move on to your options.
