Musa Basjoo

Question
I have a Musa basjoo, which according to what I've read is one of the most hardy banana trees. I would like to grow one indoors, but I'm not sure what conditions to give it. According to the care tag that came with it, it requires full shade, which is why I thought that it would do well indoors in a brightly lit location. So is it possible to grow it indoors? and if so what would be the ideal conditions (light humidity and all that jazz)?

Answer
Hi Jamin,

This type of banana plant is hardy in that it will withstand temps as low as 20 degrees F. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it is easier to grow.

Keep it tightly potted in a porous potting mix. Locate it in front of a north or east window that is uncovered throughout the day. Never allow the soil to dry out completely, but don't keep the soil constantly wet, either. Water when the top inch or so of soil is dry.

High humidity helps and warm temps promote more rapid growth. Use a fertilizer with lots of nitrogen compared to the other nutrients.
