QuestionBackground: I received a small umbrella tree last spring. I left it in its original pot, then transferred it a couple months later when it grew too large for the small 1" pot. It is now in a 4" pot (I think!) and is about 3 1/2 ft tall. I have it in a corner where it gets both morning and late afternoon sunshine, and I turn it about once a month so that it grows equally around. It dries about an inch down before I water it, and I usually water it so that the soil is nice and moist.
Problem: I noticed this morning a green fuzzy mold - very light and fluffy looking - mostly around the edges of the pot. What do I do?! What have I done wrong?? How do I save my tree?
AnswerHi Kelsey,
It sounds like you have done everything right!
Mold is not usually green, nor is mealybug, which is also light and fluffy. However, depending on soil quality there may be algae that is causing a greenish tint.
Can you email a clear photo to me at

Thanks,
