rubber plant bumps

Question
I have recently repotted my rubber plant (not realizing it I used garden soil instead of potting soil).  About two weeks since repotting, the plant has formed very small bumps all over its leaves and the stem of the plant is turning brownish.  My plant is about two feet high and I have not moved it from its window  in two years.  Do you have any suggestions on saving my rubber plant?  Should I change the soil to potting soil or is it to late.

Answer
Kellly,

Yes, you should change the soil to potting soil. Garden soil does not drain well enough unless it is very sandy garden soil.

The very ssmall bumps is a separate problem. It is an insect called scale. You can use Q-tips dipped in rubbing
alcohol to remove the hard shelled ones and then spray the entire plant with rubbing alcohol to kill all the little  ones. Repeat the spraying every other day for 2 weeks to kill any eggs that hatch. With persistance you can kill these insects and the plant will be fine. Good luck.
