QuestionI inherited subject plant today. It already has a pineapple about 3-4" tall but the leaves are turning brown and two to three of them are wilting. My grandson asked me to help nake it better, I'm the last person he should have asked but I would like to try. I think it's been over watered, it's in a quart container and the leaves are about 8-9" long. It's still in it's original soil. I live in Zone 7 (Upstate South Carolina) Can I transplant it to one of my topsoil w/sand and covered w/mulch beds? Should I keep it in the house? Should I just bury it and hope my grandson forgets he gave to me to save? Thanks for any info. Kathy
AnswerHello Kathy,
The plant might be getting too much water. Leave it in its original container and let the soil dry out a bit. After that keep the soil moist but not soggy and don't let the pot sit in any water that drains out. Keep it in bright filtered or indirect light. If it sits in the afternoon sun the leaves could sunburn and there's no way to fix that.
If it keeps going down hill you could, if they're growing, take a sucker off the plant and begin a new one. These will look like little pineapple tops growing from the base of the main pineapple top. Or you could take a store bought pineapple, twist the top off, and plant that to get a new plant...Its a little more involved than that but you can look it up or send me a follow up and i can give you the details.
Good Luck,
Justin
