Birds Nest Plant

Question
Bought the plant from a nursery about a month ago.  It seemed to have new leaves ready to grow, however they have done nothing and now seem to be turning black.  It is in about a gallon size planter and I have a water meter to check that it stays moist. Does it sound salvageable? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Marie,

If the new fronds are turning black, then there is a problem with the roots. Usually, it is a sign of root rot. That could be because you are keeping the soil too moist or because the pot is too big.

If your bird's Nest fern is appropriately potbound, as it should be, then you should water only when the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch. Moisture meters are notoriously inaccurate and I recommend that you not use it.

If you repotted it, then that cols be the source of the problem. This plant rarely needs repotting.
