QuestionI recently started several heart-leaf philodendron cuttings (actually about a year ago - took a while to get going). As new leaves appear they get stuck in their casings. Eventually the leaf stems snap and the cycle repeats with the next leaf on each plant. I've had this problem in the past with an arrowhead philodendron, but I have one now, started around the same time in pretty much the same soil and same environment, that is doing just fine. I'm perplexed.
AnswerHi Scott,
I am confused by what plant you have. Heart-leafed Philodendrons have heart-shaped leaves and they do not ordinarily have a problem unfurling. I do not know what an "arrowhead" Philodendron is, but it is not heart-shaped. Can you email me a photo so I can properly ID your plant?
Is your water on the hard side? Excess minerals in hard water often keep new leaves on plants generally from opening properly.
