yucca trees

Question
I have a yuca tree that is getting too big for my house , I have it in the only really sunny spot right now and it is reaching the ceiling and staring to brown on the top , is there any way to trim it without killing it or do I dispose of the largest one and keep the two smaller ones. I really hate to throw a tree away , I just don't know what else to do

Answer
Hello Kris,

You can cut the stem down to whatever height you would like it at and it should begin to grow new foliage. When you do this you need to be careful with watering. Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry before watering to avoid root rot.
You could also keep the left over stem for planting rather than throwing it away. Cut it into about 5 inch long pieces and allow them to dry for a few days. You can then place them in slightly moist soil where they should take root and begin new trees. Rooting hormones can also be used to up the chances of a successful rooting.

It gets tall like that because it's trying to find light. If you keep your yuccas in direct sun they will remain compact.

Good Luck,
Justin
