I have had my ficus for 22 years in my bedroom with one good southern exposure window.  So, over the years the tree has lost its top branches.  It needs another light source  - from the ceiling? and if it's not too late, what do you recommend?

A good southern exposure is more than enough for your ficus, instead of adding another light source I would recommend pruning the Ficus. Remove the dead branches from the top and prune it down. Your ficus should come back and grow with a renewed vigor.
