QuestionHi Tracy.
I recently bought a bird of paradise plant from home depot and after about a week the leaves are curling, yellowing at the edges, and beginning to split. It wasnt well watered when I bought it so I gave it a mild drink and have kept it in front of a warm window with plenty of light filtered through a white curtain. the temp in the house hasnt fluctuated to greatly and is around the mid 70's. should I spray the leaves to humidify? I'm considering blasting with water and a mild dose of fertilizer and repotting. It's still in the home depot pot but that shouldn't make a huge difference over a week. The other plants are doing well and im beginnning to wonder if I should just bring it back to home depot and get a new one - they guarantee them for a year. I would like to save this plant and if you could give me some tips I and my plant would appreciate it! thanks for your time!
Nate
AnswerHi Nate,
Birds of Paradise are high light plants so you will need to open up that white curtain to provide more light. Keep it in its existing pot. Water it thoroughly whenever the top inch or two of soil feels dry.
Humidity helps, but misting raises the humidity for only a few minutes so it is ineffective. Proper light and watering are more important.
Home Depot sells some good plants and some horrible quality plants. It is hard to know what you have unless you send a photo to my address below.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
