corn plant-dracaena massangeana

Question
I have a 32 year old plant. It only had one stalk with leaves.  It was very tall and it broke.  I put the stalk w/ the leaves in water and now it has roots growing every where. But how do I propogate it?  Do I cut the stalk into pieces?

Answer
Gail,

You propagate a plant by getting a cutting to grow roots. You have done that. The base that the piece you broke off of should readily grow a new top. You didn't say how large this top piece is. I actually prefer to root cuttings  in soil. You can cut the stalk into 2 foot pieces and dip the lower end of each end in rooting hormone then insert that end into a fresh pot of soil mixed 2 parts potting soil to 1 part extra perlite. You can put up to 3 pieces into one pot of soil and you will end up with 3 plants in that pot. The piece that already has roots in the water can also be inserted into the soil in a pot. You can keep the extra plants or give them to friends. If you have more guestions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene
