QuestionI've recently become interested in tropical plants and purchased a healthy elephant ear plant. Is it normal for the leaves to turn brown, and what can i do to keep it healthy
AnswerHi Gail,
Alocasia is prone to getting brown patches on its leaves if the light and watering are not just right. It likes bright indirect light and can tolerate a few hours of direct sun. Water thoroughly whenever the top half-inch of soil feels dry. Avoid using hard water or cold water.
It is a fragile plant that is not very tolerant of occasional over or under watering. It is best left in a small pot and should not be fertilized very often and only when it is growing actively. Use fertilizer at half-strength.
Spider mites will find it if it is under stress. Wipe the tops and bottoms of the leaves with a damp sponge every week or two as a preventive measure.
