Sago palm anatomy

Hi Will,

I emailed you a few photos of my sago palm. I need your help to identify the new growth as leaves or flowers. My guess is the larger of the two is a leaf, the smaller.....hmmm, a flower? (What is my prize for guessing correctly?!)

Hi Maya,

Thanks for the great photos! No prize for guessing correctly, but a note of appreciation for asking a good question.

Both of the new fiddleheads are leaves or fronds, not flowers. I am not sure why they look so different, but the golden one is less mature and/or it may not be as healthy. Time will tell.

Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) produce both male and female flowers on separate plants. However, it is very rare for a Sago to bloom as an indoor potted plant.
